SPIRIT OF THE LIVING GOD

Spirit-Of-The-Living-God

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me;
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Break me, melt me, mold me, fill me;
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Spirit of the living God, move among us all;
Make us one in heart and mind, make us one in love.
Humble, caring, selfless, sharing –
Spirit of the living God, move among us all.

A simple, heartfelt prayer – if we make it so! Recently we celebrated Pentecost Sunday, with all its truths about the Holy Spirit’s coming to the first believers in Jesus, and so down to us.

Daniel IversonDaniel Iverson, an American and an ordained Presbyterian pastor, lived from 1890 to 1977. He wrote the first verse of this short hymn after hearing a message on the Holy Spirit in an evangelistic meeting. It was sung during that crusade and then printed in leaflet form for use elsewhere. The hymn was published anonymously for a time, but in the 1960’s, having grown in popularity, it was credited rightly to Iverson. Only the first verse seems to be in common use, and it is the only one found in the Salvation Army Song Book.
